Death toll of Ma’alia-Rizeigat clashes in East Darfur reaches 29

A total of 29 people were killed and 45 wounded in clashes between the feuding Rizeigat and Ma’alia tribes in Sudan’s East Darfur, according to the latest estimates on Tuesday.

A total of 29 people were killed and 45 wounded in clashes between the feuding Rizeigat and Ma'alia tribes in Sudan’s East Darfur, according to the latest estimates on Tuesday. 

Rizeigat prominent leader, Mustapha Bakhit confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that 14 people were killed and were buried at Kilekel area on Sunday while 25 who were wounded are now receiving treatment at Ad Daein Hospital.

Bakhit accused the government of being slow in responding to the tensions that have been mounting between the two communities despite their knowledge of the issue. He said that the government has sent troops to the area.

Rizeigat’s Paramount Chief Mahmud Musa Madibo said they are advocating for peace to calm down the tensions within their community.

A military source who preferred anonymity said that at least 15 people from the Ma’alia tribe were also killed and 25 others injured in the same incident.

 Ma’alia leaders could not immediately be reached for comment.
