Darfuris: ‘Reduction of Unamid is a failure of civilian protection’

A large number of Darfuri citizens have described the recent decision taken by the United Nations to reduce troops of the United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur (Unamid) as “failure” of the international community to restore peace in the war-torn region.

“The UN resolution which provides for reduction of its forces in Darfur indicates that the international community has totally failed to protect civilians and dozens of UN elements who are being killed in the region” a source said.

“The decision taken to pull out the Unamid forces gradually came when the international community felt that it has become victims of war in Darfur region” the local citizens added.

Darfur natives have criticised the role played the Unamid forces in their area they revealed that the Unamid mission in the region has confined its role in compiling reports as well as pretention of its own troops and turned a blind eye to the protection of civilians and the vulnerable people in spite of huge amounts of money being spent in this regard.

The stakeholders appealed to The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) “to replace the current Unamid elements with professional and capable troops instead of poor African troops”. The civilians also called on the UN to renew its mandate in the area so as to operate under chapter seven.
