The coordinator of the Sudanese refugees fleeing the Darfur region in the Michi camp in eastern Chad revealed the deterioration of the humanitarian and health conditions inside the camp.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Assad Arbab Mohammed, a member of the Dar Masalit Displaced Persons Coordination Committee and the refugee coordinator in the Michi camp in eastern Chad, said that the camp is still witnessing a deterioration in the humanitarian conditions among the refugees.
“We have a number of cases of malnutrition among children, the elderly, and pregnant and breastfeeding women as a result of the shortages of food supplies provided by the supporting agencies, as a small amount of lentils, oil, and a sack of corn are given to 4 people per month, which has increased the suffering of the refugees,” he said.
Arbab pointed out the poor security situation inside and outside the camp, and that they were beaten and robbed when they went out to fetch water, firewood, in addition to cases of sexual harassment of women and their exposure to violence by outlaws.
He stated that there are more than 50 families outside the shelter centers, sleeping on the ground and facing the agony of cold and hunger after their transfer from Adre camp last week.
He appealed to leaders of the government of Chad and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to look into the security situation and put an end to the unruly people, and called on United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to them to save the lives of children, the elderly, and pregnant women from inevitable death by hunger.
