The civil authorities in the areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement by Abdelwahid El Nur (SLM-AW) in Jebel Marra in the Darfur region have appealed to the UN and its agencies to provide humanitarian assistance to nearly five million people threatened by hunger.
The head of the civil administration in Jebel Marra, Mujeeb Al-Rahman Al-Zubair, told Radio Tamazuj that the displaced people were living in extreme humanitarian conditions.
The ongoing war between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan Armed Forces has forced large numbers of people to flee to the areas controlled by SLM-AW, believing they were safer, Al-Zubair said.
He said the number of the displaced from various cities in Sudan had reached about five million.
Al-Zubair pointed out that upon the arrival of the displaced to their areas, they managed to provide them with security and some food, but the needs exceeded the capabilities and resources of the movement.
He appealed to the UN and its agencies to urgently intervene to save the situation from deteriorating further.
Al-Zubair described the crisis as a reflection of the policies of a state characterized by arrogance and racism, referring to the Sudanese government. He accused the state of using a divide-and-conquer policy and working to ignite wars in marginalized areas.
