Darfur activists demand accountability for humanitarian crimes

Local civil society activists in Sudan’s western region of Darfur have demanded that perpetrators of human rights violations on civilians in the region be held accountable.

Local civil society activists in Sudan’s western region of Darfur have demanded that perpetrators of human rights violations on civilians in the region be held accountable.

The General Coordinator of the Regional Action Group in Darfur, Jihan Abdallah Mohammed, said that they have monitored violations that occurred against civilians since the outbreak of the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on 15 April, and said the perpetrators should be brought to book.

Abdallah revealed to Radio Tamazuj on Monday that their primary goal is advocacy, reaching decision-makers, and influencing public policies, with a focus on all issues of concern to the Darfur region.

“Civilians in the Darfur region were subjected to many violations, including torture, killing, and displacement, in addition to sexual and verbal violence,” she stated.

The activist demands the establishment of safe paths for civilians, psychological rehabilitation, and the rebuilding of communities affected by the war.

Abdallah, who left North Darfur state a few months ago, said she faced many difficulties on the road including all kinds of violations and verbal abuses.

“I was discriminated against based on ethnicity at various checkpoints,” she explained. “There is a need to stop the fighting as soon as possible.”

The activist insists that the solutions to the Sudanese crisis require a “Sudanese to Sudanese” dialogue to address the roots of the crisis.

The Regional Working Group is a network that includes several grassroots civil society organizations active in the five states of Darfur and was founded in 2020.
