Leaders from Dar Hamed in Sudan’s North Kordofan state on Thursday launched a new initiative to end conflict between the Ma’alia and Rizeigat peoples of East Darfur.

Leaders from Dar Hamed in Sudan’s North Kordofan state on Thursday launched a new initiative to end conflict between the Ma’alia and Rizeigat peoples of East Darfur.

Leaders from Dar Hamed including their paramount chief held a meeting in Bara, North Kordofan and formed committees which will contact the two feuding groups. Dozens have been killed in clashes between the Ma’alia and Rizeigat.

The Emir of Dar Hamed, Mohamed Ahmed Tumsah, said the initiative is a road map to reach an optimal solution satisfying all parties. He noted the experience of the tribal leaders in peace and reconciliation processes as well as historical ties with both sides of the conflict.

Tumsah pointed out that kinship, neighborliness, and intermarriage ties between Rizeigat and Ma’alia represent the most important pillars to achieve forgiveness and reconciliation.
