South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has appointed Daniel Badagbu Rambasa as the new Deputy Governor of Western Equatoria State, replacing Elia Richard Box.

Daniel Badagbu is a senior official at the ruling SPLM party general secretariat in Juba and former Western Equatoria minister.

The South Sudanese leader did not give reasons for the changes, only citing presidential powers enshrined in the Constitution and provisions of the 2018 peace deal.

Eia Richard, a member of the ruling SPLM Party, was appointed to the position last month.

In another decree, President Kiir fired the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Daniel Majok Makuei, and replaced him with Dr Malok Ngor Malok.

South Sudan is governed by a transitional unity government formed under a 2018 peace agreement.

The country, which won independence in 2011 after a long conflict with Sudan, has not seen an election since.

A date has been set for national elections: Dec. 22, 2024. Yet the timing remains in question, with the United Nations and other observers doubting whether adequate preparations have been made.

The country is facing the prospect of a second extension of the transition period, owing to the continual delays in implementing crucial aspects of the peace agreement.
