Local authorities in Damazin town in Sudan’s Blue Nile state reportedly demolished a mosque at Hai Al Hijira area on Sunday, after a dispute over the ownership of the land.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, several local residents expressed resentment at the local authorities for destroying the only mosque in the residential area. They said the citizens and mosque-goers were perplexed by the move.
Sheikh Bashir Awad, an Imam of the neighbouring Al Mansoura mosque, said he was also surprised by tearing the mosque down by police.
He noted there has been a dispute over the plot on which the Hijira mosque was built in 2008, saying that someone came recently and claimed the peace of land.
The sheikh frankly accused the authorities of involvement in the matter. “You know, the land office in Damazin said clearly that the claims by that person were unfounded and baseless, but local authorities are still sticking to proceed with the case by pushing that man to grab the land,” he explained.
