The local authorities in the Upper Nile State capital, Malakal, over the weekend imposed a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew following an attempted robbery by a gang, commonly referred to as niggers, in the town’s main market.

Major General Chol Dak, the acting commissioner of police in the state, said that a criminal gang violently resisted arrest by the police in the Asosa area which led to the injury of two of the gang members while the rest fled.

“We confronted a criminal group that tried to prevent the police from implementing an order to arrest members suspected of being connected to the theft of telephones on Friday afternoon in the Asosa area in the southern side of Malakal Town,” he explained. “This led to the injury of two members of the group who were taken for treatment to Malakal Hospital.”

Gen. Dak revealed that the state authorities then ordered the closure of the market to prevent looting by the criminal elements.

He however confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that calm had returned to the town, shops had reopened, and that the police were tracking down the gang members who fled outside the town to Baliet and Pigi.

The curfew which started on Saturday will continue for one week.
