Cueibet County father flees after killing daughter’s lover

A sergeant in the South Sudan Wildlife Service has fled after killing a police officer over a love affair with his daughter.

The incident occurred in the remote Magumbil Village in Cueibet County of Lakes State on Monday.

Lakes State Police Spokesperson Elijah Mabor Makuac told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the wildlife service sergeant had fled and that the security forces were pursuing him.

“The security situation is calm and normal except for a few incidences over the weekend,” he said.

Makuac said information indicated that the deceased was in a love affair with the daughter of the suspected killer father.

“However, last night, the father in-law came at probably 10 pm and woke the deceased from his room. He shot him dead then fled. We are still investigating and the culprit has not been arrested,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lakes State civil society activist Matur Makoi regretted the incident, saying the organized forces are not supposed to take the law into their own hands.

Makoi said any well-trained officer should exercise restraint even if provoked.

“You need to know that there are also customary laws that deal with elopement or inappropriate engagements. What happened in Cueibet County is very unfortunate,” he said.

“I appeal to the state government to ensure proper vetting of the prospective recruits into the organized forces,” he added.
