At least five people, three young men, and two soldiers were killed in armed confrontations between members of the organized forces and armed youth in Tiaptiap Payam of Cueibet County, Lakes State on Wednesday.
Cueibet County deputy police chief inspector Emmanuel Manyang Machol told Radio Tamazuj that two soldiers were also wounded in the clashes.
He said the clashes erupted when a joint security team from the police, wildlife, fire brigade, and army accompanying Cueibet County Commissioner Isaiah Akhol Mathiang went to Tiaptiap Payam to apprehend suspected criminals.
Manyang noted that despite the clashes, 18 people suspected of cattle raids, road ambushes, and robberies were arrested and brought to the county headquarters.
The Executive Director of Cueibet County Chol Cindut said, "Yes, there are indeed casualties. Two soldiers and three armed youth have been killed, and two soldiers wounded. We don't know how many youths were wounded."
However, the area's Paramount Chief Anyijong Manyang who is now in Rumbek confirmed the clashes but said the casualty figures could be higher. He said the situation is now calm.
