Security officials in the Lakes State capital, Rumbek, have reported 12 murders and 10 rapes over the past month across the state.

State Police Commissioner Isaac Mayoum Gop told Radio Miraya he believes the surge in crime is a result of revenge attacks. There have also been 36 incidents related to personal attacks reported.

“This issue of revenge is a non-stop activity from youth side,” he said.

In a separate incident, a car was ambushed and burned on the Yirol-Awerial road this week in the state. Gop said the driver and the passengers were able to escape after they surrendered their belongings.
