Violent crime continues to rise in South Sudanese cities including a number of cases of robbery and suspected murder perpetrated in the last few days:
Relief organization robbed in Bor
Unknown gunmen broke into offices of a USAID-funded food security project in Jonglei state on Monday, Sudan Tribune reported. The office was reportedly run by a consortium including Catholic Relief Service (CRS) and Save the Children International. The thieves broke into five offices and took laptops and cameras besides $117,000 and 90,000 pounds from the finance office, according to a state official.
Shooting in Rumbek
Two people were injured in Rumbek on Wednesday evening when youths and police clashed. Radio Miraya reported that the fighting erupted when police tried to disperse two groups of youth who were clashing in an area near Deng Nhia.
Suspected murder case in Juba
A man was found dead in Hai Referendum area of Juba on Tuesday morning, eyewitnesses said. Witnesses said the body appeared to have been beaten with sticks. The dead man was believed to have been staying alone in a house.
Hospital receives more wounded crime victims
Juba Teaching Hospital has registered an increase in the number of accident patients and victims of crime. Dr. Abraham Adut, the hospital’s Director for Accidents and Emergency, told Radio Miraya there has been a significant number of patients who were attacked in armed robberies.
“The last one we received was a boy with his mother who passed away due to an armed robbery attack. They were attacked in the house and I think the mother was shot dead instantly and then the young boy was also shot to his left cheek.”
Dut added, “We really, really do appeal if there could be something to be done about this because we are receiving people being attacked in their own houses. Sometimes they are beaten by metallic bars and sometimes they are just shot dead with guns.”
Dawn robbery at bishops’ compound in Juba
Armed gunmen entered the premises of the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference compound, also known as Palica, at dawn on Thursday. The gunmen were wearing military uniforms and arrived in two vehicles. They broke part of the fence and seized some office equipment and valuables. The robbery follows a recent robery at another nearby Catholic Church premises.
