New emergency court in Wau to deal with crime surge

The judiciary has formed an 'emergency court' in Wau to deal swiftly with suspects arrested in a new security crackdown. Initially the court will handle more than 20 suspects awaiting rial. The governor has said that he directed security organs to crack down on crime that surged in certain neighborhoods.

Report of scabies in Yei Prison; authorities deny

Human rights activists in Yei have reported at least 10 cases of scabies among inmates at Yei Prison but Yei Chief Inspector of Prisons Captain Gore Wurjo Kenyi says there are no cases of scabies in the prison, according to the Catholic Radio Network. Activists have suspected that poor sanitation could have contributed to the spread of the skin disease which is thought to be scabies.

Night patrol arrests six in Wau

Colonel Salah Issa, the officer in charge of the night patrol in Wau, announced that six suspected criminals were arrested on Wednesday including four suspects were armed with guns. Speaking on Radio Miraya he said that they were intercepted as they attempted to rob a shop in Hai Jebel. The suspects will be tried at the newly formed emergency court.

High suicide rate among Abyei community police

Community police are investigating why one of their officers apparently killed himself in the Mabony area of Agok on Wednesday. Abyei Today reported that 37-year-old Monyjur Deng Dau was the third community police officer to take his own life this year.

Separately, officers in Agok have released a 20-year-old woman who had been charged with attempted suicide. She tried to kill herself a month ago after being beaten by her husband. He withdrew the case, saying it would be settled by family elders.

Arson in Agok

Police in Agok have arrested a 20-year-old woman who is accused of burning down her fiancé’s house on Wednesday. Nobody was hurt, although the damage was estimated at 20,000 ssp.

Burglary at Juba Rejaf Parish

Thieves entered All Saints Parish Rejaf on Monday and took an uncounted amount of money from church cupboards. They stole money given by worshippers for the offertory and meant for general renovation of priests’ house, Radio Bakhita reported.

Traders robbed on Mingkamen-Terekeka road

A group of traders traveling between Mingkamen and Terekeka were robbed by a gang on Monday night as they were returning from Juba, according to a report by the humanitarian radio station in Mingkamen operated by Internews. Mingkamen Trade Union Spokesperson Amakou Ngor Welken said a trade convoy of five vehicles was stopped at gunpoint at Mooni village by a 'gang' of about 18 men. Gunmen took 20 mobile phones, 2 laptop computers and personal items like handbags, he said.
