Authorities in Nyirol County of Jonglei State have banned social gatherings and called for the strict compliance of Covid-19 safety measures following a surge in cases.

Over 25 cases were reported in 24 hours, according to county health officials.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, James Bol Makuey, Nyirol county commissioner, said: “28 cases were identified by our health partner here in Langkien. So now, there is general awareness going on of preventive measures. Social distancing will be observed especially in the market and schools.”

Bol urged the people of Nyirol to observe social distancing, washing of hands, and wearing of masks as measures to prevent the virus.

For his part, Duop Rom Kok, the acting state health ministry director-general, said the Covid-19 surge is worrying and that a vaccination campaign will be launched to curb the spread.

“As of Friday, we reported at least 28 cases in Langkien. They are being quarantined at their homes with excerption to three critical cases hospitalized at the facility in Langkien. As a ministry, we engage our partners so that a campaign is carried out. So we appeal to everyone across Jonglei to observe Covid-19 measures,” he said.

A resident of Langkien town, Both Jal, said they are alarmed by the rising cases.

“We are distraught, over 20 cases in just one day. I have been doing awareness in the market but people are not following. This is a big problem,” he lamented.
