Covid-19: Second vaccination campaign ongoing in Lakes state

Health authorities in Lakes State Monday rolled out the second Covid-19 vaccination campaign at the Rumbek State Hospital after receiving more than 4,500 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines last Friday.

Health authorities in Lakes State Monday rolled out the second Covid-19 vaccination campaign at the Rumbek State Hospital after receiving more than 4,500 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines last Friday.

Dr. Jacob Akuocpir Acuoth, Lakes State health minister told Radio Tamazuj that the vaccines from the national ministry of health are part of the country's second consignment of about 60,000 doses from the global COVAX facility.

The minister said the vaccines are meant for people who already received their first doses of the vaccines. 

"This is a second jab which is meant for those who have received their first dose. The doses that have been received, we received 4,800 doses for Rumbek State Hospital, Cueibet County Hospital, and over 1,300 doses transported directly from Juba to Yirol County Hospital," he noted. 

Dr. Acuoth said the ministry is happy to see that the people in Rumbek turned up in numbers for the vaccinations. 

"The lineup since morning for people who are ready to get their second dose of AstraZeneca jab is very good. As we know that the Covid-19 pandemic, there is an evolution of new variants with the new wave coming. But the only way to protect yourself is to be vaccinated to reduce the risk," he added. 

Minister Acuoth stressed the importance of the vaccines saying it is safe and pointed out that the campaigns will run through the 30th of September.

The Director of the Infectious Disease Unit in Lakes State Dr. Ezekiel Mourwel Maker called on those who have not received their first jabs to remain patient until more vaccines are delivered.
