Residents of Kauda in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains region have complained that the prices of consumer goods and food items have risen sharply in the area.

Kauda is a stronghold of the rebel Sudan's People Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Gen. Abdelaziz al-Hilu.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, several residents complained of the miserable conditions due to the rising costs of consumer goods.

The locals said the relevant authorities have not ensured enough measures to keep a check on the rising prices.

Khamisa Nimeiri, a resident, said since the novel coronavirus broke out in Sudan, prices have risen sharply and goods became scarce. She pointed out that the prices of food commodities have gone up to a level that people are no longer able to afford them.

For his part, Khaled Othman, the head of Chamber of Commerce in Kauda attributed high prices of consumer goods to COVID-19, which saw restrictions imposed on traders’ movements.

There were also numerous calls for the transitional government and the opposition to expedite the ongoing peace talks for stability to prevail in the country.
