Authorities in the border town of Nimule in Eastern Equatoria State have established an isolation center within Nimule hospital to handle suspected cases of the novel coronavirus.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Dr. David Nyuna, the medical director of Nimule hospital said the newly established isolation center has the capacity to accommodate eight people.

“The isolation center we have is the one that was set up for GBV [Gender-Based Violence]. It is the same one assigned for coronavirus. Currently, there are three suspects waiting for their results. These ones are mostly truck drivers,” he said.

“Food is a problem. As members of the technical working group, we are making some little contributions to ensure that the suspects are fed, but there is nothing from the government or NGOs,” he added.

Separately, the senior health official expressed concerns over the lack of testing kits for screening people at the border with Uganda.

“We do not have facilities here for testing. All samples are being taken to Juba for testing. My message to the public is that coronavirus is real and we must follow the guidelines to remain safe,” he stressed.

South Sudan has so far recorded 120 cases of the novel coronavirus.
