Court adjourns impeached Wau speaker’s case until next week

The constitutional court in South Sudan’s capital Juba has adjourned its sitting on a petition submitted by the impeached speaker of Western Bahr al Ghazal State Assembly Andrea Mayar against Governor Rizig Hassan Zachariah until 30 June.

The constitutional court in South Sudan’s capital Juba has adjourned its sitting on a petition submitted by the impeached speaker of Western Bahr al Ghazal State Assembly Andrea Mayar against Governor Rizig Hassan Zachariah until 30 June.

Mayar has accused Rizig of abusing the state constitution by interfering with parliamentary affairs, saying Rizig called MPs to his office and home to collect signatures to impeach him. The impeachment resolution was presented at an extraordinary sitting that did not meet quorum, Mayar claims.

For his part, Agok Makur, Mayar’s defense lawyer, told Radio Tamazuj that the sitting was postponed until 30 June in order to look into the petition. He said the sitting was adjourned due to incomplete quorum of judges who are nine in number. He added that many senior officials and citizens came to attend the sitting.
