Two people, a husband and wife from Makol Cuei Boma of Bor County, are being treated for snakebites at Bor State Hospital after they were bitten by a venomous snake in their mosquito net while sleeping in neighboring Lakes State Awerial County on Saturday night.
Dr. Bol Chau Manyang, the medical director of Bor State Hospital, confirmed that the couple, whom he did not name, are in their 20s and had gone to visit their relatives in the neighboring Awerial County last week and spent the night in a hut. He said the couple did not notice the snake until they felt a sharp pain in their private parts in the middle of the night.
“On Sunday morning, two patients were brought in who were bitten by a snake in the previous night.” Dr. Chau said. “They are currently admitted at Bor State Hospital where they are undergoing treatment and hopefully their situation will improve.”
He said snakebite cases are common, especially during the hot weather when snakes come out of their hiding places.
Dr. Bol urged the public to be vigilant and take preventive measures against snakebites, such as wearing boots, using mosquito nets, clearing bushes around their homes, and seeking immediate medical attention in case of a bite.
Medicines Sans Frontières (MSF) says it is responding to cases of snake bites at its health facilities in Twic County of Warrap State and other parts of the country. MSF treated up to 1,000 cases of snakebites across South Sudan in 2023.
