Council of states seeks to create 164 counties in South Sudan

South Sudan’s Council of States on Monday listened to a proposal submitted by 20 governors of the 28 proposed states to create 164 counties in the country.

South Sudan’s Council of States on Monday listened to a proposal submitted by 20 governors of the 28 proposed states to create 164 counties in the country.

The Council referred the proposal to the committees of legislations, rights, decentralization, and states affairs for more consultations with the local government commission.

Council speaker Joseph Bol Chan said during the opening session of the sitting that the council will study the proposal giving consideration to the number of people and financial abilities.

But some MPs during the deliberations said the governor’s proposal did not specify any role for a local government commission and is not based on the basic requirements for the establishment of counties.

They pointed out that the proposal was not also based on the number of people and the financial abilities nor the current economic situation in the country.
