A delegation of the Sudanese Council of Churches met on Monday with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, First Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in Port Sudan to discuss justice, peace and the ongoing war in Sudan.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bishop Ezekiel Kundo, the head of the delegation, stated that the meeting dwelt on peace in Sudan, especially the ongoing suffering caused by war. He praised the role of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in “trying to achieve peace and stability in the country.”
For his part, Reverend Aziz al-Tayib Ali, the head of the Sudanese Church Council, said, “We affirm the council’s support for anything that promotes consolidation of peace and peaceful coexistence in society.”
He said the meeting also discussed violations against churches during the past period and the looting orchestrated by the armed groups.
According to the United Nations estimate, 8.2 million people have been displaced, and more than 13,000 lives have been lost in the civil war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which started on April 15 last year.
Throughout the current war, both the army and the RSF have been accused of war crimes, including the indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and arbitrary detention of civilians.
