A roundup of crime-related events in South Sudan:
Security personnel allegedly kill one, abduct two men
Security personnel suspected to be National Security killed one man and abducted two others in Rock City area of South Sudan’s capital Juba on Saturday morning after a shooting during an armed robbery, neighbours said.
A group of gunmen raided a house in Rock City, and a nearby resident who was an army captain exchanged fire with the suspected robbers, wounding one while the others escaped, residents reported.
A local resident said the people who had attempted to break into the house were claiming to be NSS personnel, going door to door saying: “Open the door we are government,” with the actual intention of robbing the residents.
The SPLA captain then called for security personnel or for the 777 police to come and arrest the wounded criminal, according to a resident.
Instead, gunmen first returned to the area and retaliated for the wounding of their colleague by shooting dead the SPLA officer on the spot.
Two local men were taken for questioning to the NSS head office in Hai Jebel then to their operations office near the Nile, including one who works for SPLA Military Intelligence. They were allegedly beaten badly.
Gunmen shot dead two in Juba’s Tongpiny
At least two people were shot dead when gunmen opened fire on a boda-boda motorbike in Juba’s Tongpiny area on Friday morning, according to an eyewitness.
The assailants escaped with the motor bike and left the bodies of the boda-boda driver and passenger.
“It was very sad to see people killed every time like this,” one eyewitness lamented.
Armed robbery has been growing in South Sudan’s capital amid presence of security forces. Citizens have urged the government to tackle the crime wave without result.
Compound robberies in Tongpiny
Criminals attempted to break into a residential compound in Tongpiny on Friday night, but fled when a resident fired his gun into the air. The next day, a group of three armed men forced their way into a neighboring compound and managed to steal one motorbike before escaping. No one was hurt in either incident.
Correction: An earlier version of this story identified the alleged killers of the SPLA officer in this case as 777 police.
