Controversial election of parliament speaker in Lakes

The governor of Lakes State removed the Assembly Speaker Baipath Majuec, who was replaced by State Information Minister Dhieu Wal yesterday in a controvertial vote in the state assembly.

Radio Miraya reported that a section of MPs marched out of the assembly hall in protest after the names of some candidates were rejected.

“This afternoon the MPs converged inside and they were given the chance to elect the speaker... the election ended up in crisis after some MPs walked off. The one who was prepared by the state government was nominated and another contestant was nominated but his nomination was objected,” said a Miraya reporter.

He added, “The MPs wanted to nominate a third opponent. Meanwhile, the acting speaker objected to this and ruled that the person nominated first would become speaker. This disappointed some MPs who marched out of the state parliament.”

Reportedly, Baipath Majuec has rejected his removal, accusing some MPs of conspiring against him.
