Two construction workers building the South Sudan Currency Centre in Rumbek, Lakes State, were on Monday involved in a freak accident when their car overturned.
A Chinese construction worker and his local driver, employed by China First Highway Engineering Company (CFHEC), overturned a Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle near the Kiir Mayardit Women Hospital in Rumbek town.
The traffic police investigations officer in Lakes State, Awet Deng, told Radio Tamazuj that occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and were recuperating in hospital.
“We went there to inspect and investigate what the cause of the accident that led to the car overturning, but we found out it was their car alone which overturned and the cause was over speeding,” Awet said.
He said the driver sustained leg and head injuries while the Chinese construction worker sustained minor injuries.
“There were only two people in the car, a local driver who sustained leg and head injuries and the Chinese construction worker who sustained body injuries and they are well,” said Awet.
He cautioned drivers not to speed inside Rumbek town due to the bad state of the roads and ongoing construction works on the Juba-Rumbek road.
Rumbek State Hospital's medical director in charge of the surgical ward, Teran Madit, confirmed that the two are in stable condition.
“I was just called yesterday to Rumbek State Hospital for an emergency when the car accident occurred to dress the wounds and injuries of the two construction workers. One is a local driver for the Chinese company and the other is a Chinese construction worker,” Dr. Madit said.
He said the Chinese national is stable and was taken to their base at the South Sudan Currency Centre and will be taken to Juba for further treatment while the driver had his wounds dressed and is receiving treatment at Rumbek State Hospital.
