Conflict resolution conference held in Akobo East

A two-day civil society training on conflict management and mitigation ended Wednesday in Akobo East County of Bieh State.

32 participants from various civil society groups participated in the conference which was facilitated by the civil affairs department of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The training targeted women, youth, traditional leaders, and faith-based groups in Jonglei State and parts of Bieh State, a breakaway state established by the SPLM-IO authorities in the area.

They said the trainings aim to help people use better mechanisms for conflict resolution to understand root causes conflicts in communities.

One of the participants, Chan Wechtuor told Radio Tamazuj that the training has provided him with a peaceful way of resolving conflict through reconciliation and forgiveness by recognizing he is part of a community and a nation.

Participants and facilitators identified causes of conflict as poverty, hunger, and revenge. They said these issues can be solved by creating jobs for the youth, supporting agriculture, and educating civilians in conflict mitigation.

The facilitators said they have carried out similar trainings in Duk, Pibor, Pochalla, and the Bor Protection of Civilians site. They will next visit Lankien.
