The University of Juba's Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) center with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has installed computer and electrical labs to meet the needs of the youth in Torit town of Eastern Equatoria State.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj during the installation and handover session at Torit Vocational Institute this week, University of Juba lecturer Mr. Richard Ring Kwach says the lab equipped with about 30 functional computers, will offer training on internet connection and basic computer skills.
"We installed two laboratories; one is a computer lab, fully installed, functioning, and electronics lab. Two more labs are not yet installed but we have the equipment in the store for chemistry and physics lab,” he said.
UNDP's Field Coordinator Mrs. Walusungu Nguluwe says they conducted a needs assessment for the youth in Torit before supporting the initiative.
“I think it will allow young people to educate themselves and it is the only place in Torit that will be offering computer lessons and also with electrical as well. For me is just to call out to the young people that the vocational training center is here so I would encourage the young people to apply and go through the training. They are very short modules and at the end of the day they will receive some sort of start-up kits for them to start the business,” she said.
The principal at Torit Vocational Institute Okello German advised the youth to take the opportunity to learn and gain the skills for their empowerment.
“This training is very important. After graduation, they will be equipped with the knowledge and it will help get employment," he said.
