Communist Party leader calls for political freedoms in South Sudan

A leading member of the South Sudan Communist Party is calling on President Salva Kiir’s administration to allow for political freedoms and freedom of expression during the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

A leading member of the South Sudan Communist Party is calling on President Salva Kiir’s administration to allow for political freedoms and freedom of expression during the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

Speaking at a seminar organized by Al-Watan Arabic Daily Newspaper in Juba over the weekend, Ismael Suleiman said basic freedoms are non-existent in the country.

"People are subjected to harassment when they exercise their freedoms, such as the right to organize a peaceful demonstration, strike, and political freedoms," he said.

Suleiman said the South Sudan Political Parties Act is meant to allow different political parties to conduct their party activities freely including through the state media.
