Committee to monitor livestock migration in Rumbek Counties

The Internal Cattle Migration Monitoring Committee (ICMMC) concluded a two-day Peace Canal training session at the Afex Rumbek Hotel on Thursday.

The training was attended by chiefs, Gelwong youth leaders, women, and intellectuals.

ICMMC, chaired by the Lakes State Local Government Minister and deputized by the Minister for Peace Building, is tasked with monitoring cattle movement in Rumbek Center, Rumbek East, and Rumbek North.

The Lakes State Local Government Minister, Mabor Meen Wol, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the meeting extensively addressed the migration of cattle.

“They formed a 21-member committee, headed by myself and deputized by Nyanhok Malou, the Minister for Peace Building,” Wol said.

He explained that the committee’s role is to regulate the movement of cattle herders to the Toch Wetland when there is a scarcity of water and grass.

“We are to be informed as a committee, and then we organize the safe movement of cattle herders to areas where they can access enough water and grass, while also preventing violence,” he said.

The committee, Wol continued, will hold regular meetings to address any issues that may arise.

Malou said the committee will monitor how the cattle migrate to the upper and lower Toch to avoid violence during the movement.

She explained that the idea emerged after last year’s cattle migration conference and was one of its resolutions.

Gelwong youth leader Makoth Makueng Dhuol said that Governor Rin Tueny Mabor allowed the youth to migrate to the Aguoc cattle camp last year and appealed for all conflicts to be handled in accordance with the law.

Area Peace Canal Coordinator Mary Arun Gol stated that one of the resolutions signed during the annual cattle migration was to form a committee to monitor the movement, starting with pre-dialogues.

She added that the committee will conduct meetings with peace partners.
