A constitutional review committee in Aweil East State has concluded a draft of a proposed state constitution and expects it to be endorsed soon by the State Legislative Assembly.
Aweil East is one of three proposed successor sates of Northern Bahr al Ghazal.
William Ater Lual, the State Minister of Information and the Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, says he presented the proposal to the Council of Ministers where it was passed unanimously. The minister hopes that the Governor of Aweil East State, Deng Deng Akuei, will assent the document.
“The governor issued the order forming the committee to review our constitution. So we did review it and as the minister in charge and as the chairman of the committee I presented the final report to the council of ministers. It was passed. Then I took it to the August House. I did the same on that side, then I left it there fore the final reivew. And its my hope that it will be finished soon by the state legislative assembly,” he said.
Aweil East State is one of 28 states that President Salva Kiir created by decree but which opposition parties including elements of the SPLM-IO consider illegitimate. None of the 28 states have constitutions. South Sudan’s national constitution stipulates that there are only 10 states and it has not been amended.
