Cleric: South Sudan arms purchases ‘shameful’

A religious leader in South Sudan’s Kajokeji says that the arms purchases that the country is making are ‘shameful’ and that the guns should be laid down.

Rev Eli Kajamino of the Episcopal Church spoke during three days of prayer and fasting in Kajokeji for peace in the country.

The prayers brought together Christians of different denominations from Kangapo, Kajo-keji, Liwolo and Nyepo counties. “The gun has not actually brought peace. None of the parties that fought actually won the battle,” said Kajimino.

“The big guns, the aircrafts, even any kind of armory that we are purchasing to fight each other is a shame,” he said.

The reverend added, “We are fighting our selves, we are South sudanese – there is no attacker from outside. We need to come together. We need to come together and cry to God, God, give us peace.”

”We need unity – God can give us the unity because God is a symbol of unity.”

Eli quoted from the Book of Jeremiah saying, “I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed. And if that nation repents of its evil then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planned, it continues and continues.”
