At least six people were reportedly killed and several others injured during clashes over a pregnant girl in the Protection of Civilians (PoC) site in Juba, a youth leader said.
Gatluoth Nyang, the Secretary General of the Nuer Youth Union, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that the clashes between Leek and Dok Nuer communities from Unity State living in the PoC camp in Juba first erupted on Sunday over a pregnant girl.
“Currently we have at hand six people who have died and the injuries are so many. Some of the people have been beaten and some of the injured are at the hospital in Giada,” he said. “We have not tried to get the accurate number of the injured people but the number of the dead up to Wednesday at 11 a.m. is six people.”
Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin, the police spokesman, confirmed that the inter-communal clashes left six people dead and said the police investigating the matter.
“On the first day, there were three people who were confirmed dead and then the number increased and currently the total number is six,” he said.
Gen. Justin said the calm returned to the camp after the intervention of the police.
“The PoC was already handed over to us, South Sudan National Police Service, and we have a police post there. The situation is now calm and the two groups have been separated,” he stated. “We are now investigating this and then the community leaders of the two groups are involved in the investigation, they are cooperating with us and their cooperation is very good.”
