Clashes erupt on Christmas Day in Maban County

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has reported heavy exchange of fire near Doro camp in Maban County in South Sudan’s Eastern Nile State on Christmas Day.

Earlier last Month, government forces accused opposition fighters allied to Riek Machar of causing insecurity around Maban County.

Elona Syneko, spokesperson for the ICRC in South Sudan, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that there were clashes near Doro camp in Maban County on Sunday night.

She said yesterday. “Yes, I talked to my colleagues and they confirmed that there were some clashes yesterday, and the clashes continued throughout the night. But I don’t have more information at this stage, so we are just monitoring the situation to see whether there are any humanitarian consequences or not,” said Syneko.

The ICRC spokesperson pointed out that it remains unclear exactly who was fighting each other near Doro camp.

For his part, Santo Domic, deputy spokesman for the SPLA forces, denied knowledge of any clashes in Maban County on Christmas Day.
