Local residents in Kajo-keji County in South Sudan’s Yei River State are living in fear and panic that fighting could erupt in the area at any time, a religious leader said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, Emmanuel Mori Modi, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kajo-keji, said that security fears in the area forced many citizens to flee to refugee camps in Uganda.
He pointed out that shops were closed as a result of rumours about insecurity in the area. The religious leader called on citizens not to listen to unfounded rumours.
Emmanuel revealed that most of the local residents who crossed to Uganda have recently returned back to the area due to lack of food and basic services there.
“There are problems if they go there, there is no water, no enough food, so we are calling on them to stay in their area, now many people went there, but they have returned back,” said Emmanuel.
Multiple sources told Radio Tamazuj earlier that the families who fled to Uganda decided to return back due to food shortage and conflicts with the host community in northern Uganda.
