A soldier who approached a UN protection-of-civilians site in Malakal and opened fire was disarmed and beaten to death by displaced people last Saturday, according to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
As recounted by acting Mission spokesman Joseph Conteras, an SPLA soldier approached one of the entrances to the protection-of-civilians (POC) site at the Mission’s Malakal compound on the evening of 2 May and opened fire.
“He was disarmed and beaten by a number of internally displaced persons outside of the POC site. The soldier died of his injuries and his remains have been returned to the SPLA. UNMISS is investigating the incident,” Conteras told Radio Tamazuj.
He dismissed a rumor that the soldier had been shot and killed by UN peacekeepers in front of the Malakal base, saying this was false.
