A leading civil society organization in South Sudan has welcomed what it termed as “positive developments” to establish a hybrid court in the country.

This comes after South Sudan’s Minister of Justice Paulino Wanawilla last week presented to the cabinet a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government and the African Union on the establishment of a hybrid court to prosecute those involved in crimes.

Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), said in a statement yesterday that the recent development on the formation of a hybrid court is impressive and motivating.

He further said the move to ensure accountability in South Sudan is encouraging. “Making the institutions of chapter 5 of the peace agreement is practical and it offers great opportunities of driving homegrown solutions,” he said.

CEPO called upon the government and AU to work together in order to implement chapter five of the peace agreement.
