Civil society organizations in the disputed Abyei region on Monday staged protests against the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) for failing to replace the head of UNISFA engineering unit.
Hundreds of Abyei residents marched peacefully last month asking UNISFA to review contracts of companies working with the mission.
They called on UNISFA to terminate the contract of an official of the engineering unit and replace him with a local resident.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Chol Makuei who was part of the strike said the protesters will continue until the Jordanian national is sacked from his position.
"The strike is open and peaceful and it will be lifted when our demand is met and responded to,” Makuei said.
UNISFA officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
