Civil aviation authority seeks to reconstruct Wau airport

The Civil Aviation Authority plans to upgrade Wau Airport to meet international standards, a government official said.

The Civil Aviation Authority plans to upgrade Wau Airport to meet international standards, a government official said.

Wau airport is located to the northwest of the central business district of the city.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, the Physical Infrastructure and Urban Development minister in Wau State, John Peter Miskin said the design was last week discussed with a committee from the capital, Juba.

“The committee came to Wau and saw the present airport, made a design which will cover new arrival and departure terminals. There will also be a parking place,” he said.

Miskin further said relocation of local residents living near the airport is yet to be discussed after the current airport size surprised committee members.

“We have not yet discussed the obstacles that will face the project because there are residential areas near the airport. When the committee members saw the airport, they expected it to be large in size, but it had covered their plan,” the minister said.

He added, “When it comes to the issue of people living near the airport, the ministry is ready to move them to other areas because we do not want anything that can stop this project. We will always prioritize the public interest and not the interest of individuals”.

The state official disclosed that new plots will be allocated to those who live near the airport area. He said the state government is undertaking the airport construction.

The project is expected to start next month.
