Citizens react to news of governors’ dismissals

Many Juba citizens said they are against President Salva Kiir’s decision to remove Central Equatoria Governor Clement Wani Konga and Western Equatoria Governor Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro.

Kiir issued a decree via state television firing the two governors, along with their counterparts in Upper Nile and Warrap states Sunday evening.

Citizens from diverse backgrounds in Juba – which falls in Central Equatoria – told Radio Tamazuj that the dismissal of the two Equatoria governors was “unfortunate.”

“To me it is bad, what happened is bad,” said one citizen, who requested anonymity. “It was not supposed to be done that way.

But respondents in Kaujok and Tonj South in Warrap states welcomed the dismissal of their state’s Governor Nyandeng Malek Deliech.

A resident of Kuajok told Radio Tamazuj that residents actually took to the streets to celebrate the decision. She said Deliech had become unpopular because he had failed to deliver promised services to people.

There was little reaction to the removal of Governor Simon Kun Puoch in war-torn Upper Nile state, where thousands of citizens have been displaced or are living on United Nations bases.
