Citizens in the UN ‘Protection of Civilians’ Site (PoC) in Malakal town in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State have condemned recent constitutional amendments voted on by parliament to create 28 states.
Several internally displaced persons told Radio Tamazuj that the decision is inconsistent with terms and spirit of the signed peace agreement between President Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar in August.
Aban Yor, a camp leader sheltering inside the UN base, told Radio Tamazuj that they are not happy about the constitutional amendments to create 28 states, saying Kiir’s decision undermines the signed peace agreement.
The camp leader warned that the decision will ignite a new civil war if the government insists to implement the decision and appoint governors of the newly created states.
“The people are not happy, I expect fighting to erupt if the governors are appointed. The decision may derail this peace,” he said.
