Displaced people in the UN protection sites in Juba, Bor and Malakal have welcomed the African Union proposal to send regional troops to South Sudan.
In interviews with Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, a number of displaced people said the two warring parties failed to implement the peace agreement they signed in August last year.
They said they are welcoming the proposal of sending peacekeepers under the UN for protection of civilians and saving the peace from collapse.
Zacharia John Tut, a displaced citizen in the UN camp in Bor town, said they are with the AU proposal for sending regional troops to South Sudan for peacekeeping and protection of civilians in Juba.
He added that those who demonstrated against the proposal in Juba on Wednesday do not represent the people of South Sudan but the government in Juba, saying that they have spent two years in the displacement camps and need peace to return back to their homes.
“We welcome the regional intervention to safeguard the implementation of the peace agreement and protect the civilians in Juba. We need peace because we were in the displacement camp for more than two years,” said Tut.
Selena Moro, a displaced woman from the UN protection site in Juba, said civilians are dying due to war since the Anyanya One until today.
“We are suffering from wars since the Anyaanya One up to now. Our children have died and still dying. We want the regional troops to come and protect the civilians,” she added.
