Bishop Paul Yogusuk, chairman of a church committee for peace and reconciliation in South Sudan, has reported that there is famine in greater Mundri area due to security tensions in the area following fighting that erupted last year between government force and armed groups.

Bishop Paul Yogusuk, chairman of a church committee for peace and reconciliation in South Sudan, has reported that there is famine in greater Mundri area due to security tensions in the area following fighting that erupted last year between government force and armed groups.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on a weekly peace and reconciliation programme, he said the security situation in Mundri is back to normal but there is famine facing the area as a whole.

“Generally, there is famine in Mundri because the people did not plant due to the conflict in the area. But the situation is back to normal,” he said.

Yogusuk stressed the need to provide food for the population.

The bishop pointed out that he has visited the area recently to follow up the implementation of an agreement signed by the government and armed groups in November last year.

“The implementation of the peace agreement is going well. We have managed to let everybody play his role, the women, the youth, the elderly people including bishops and the church,” said Yogusuk.
