Chukudum police arrest woman for killing her mother

The police in Chukudum in Budi County, Eastern Equatoria State have arrested an 18-year-old woman for allegedly killing her mother.

Lucia Najore Martin is accused of killing her mother Rose Alphonse Colombus, 42, on Sunday last week.

The police say the deceased was suffocated to death and had her neck broken before her body was hanged to make it look like a suicide.

However, the police said that their preliminary investigations suggested Najore killed her mother because the latter drank and was addicted to alcohol which made her insult and abuse people. The daughter claimed that her mother’s behavior after drinking disgraced her.

Budi County police crime officer, Celsious Desirous Logwe, said, “We have confirmed this issue. When this lady was brought to the police station here and we referred her to the prisons on remand because the investigations are still going on. When we arrested this lady and asked her why she committed the incident, she said her mother brings shame to her because she drinks a lot of alcohol like Takaya and Guu (local brews). That is what brought about all these issues.”

For her part, Anyu Flora, the Budi women chairperson, described the incident as unfortunate.

“This lady (Najore) has no problem but she is always complaining that her mother roams and quarrels on the roads and insults people creating shame for her. I think that is the cause of the problem,” Anyu said. “You know, the issue of ladies saying she is bringing shame, maybe someone wants to engage her. The suitor will not do that (engage) because her mother insults people on the road. This is the problem that took her mother’s life.”

Anyu advised the women and girls in Chukudum to refrain from drinking alcohol and taking matters into their own hands.
