Cholera outbreaks have been confirmed in 9 states across South Sudan, according to the country’s ministry of health, the treatment of which has been hampered by continuing fighting in some areas of the country.
There have been over 3,100 cases of Cholera in 2016, the ministry said, and at least 44 people have died from the disease.
Cholera is an infection spread by ingesting food and water that is contaminated with bacteria. Safe drinking water and regular sanitation are the most effective ways to thwart the disease.
The affected states include Imatong, Eastern Lakes, Jubek, Terekeka, Jonglei, Western Bieh, Northern Leich, Southern Leich, and Eastern Nile, according to the ministry.
The hotline to report suspected cholera cases is 1144.
