Cholera outbreak reported in Kakuma refugee camp

An outbreak of cholera has been reported in Kenya’s Kakuma camp for Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees.

Yasser Suleiman, a doctor in charge of health and sanitation at the camp, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that 11 cholera cases were confirmed over the last two days. He said those affected are mainly women and children.

Suleiman expressed his concern over deteriorating humanitarian conditions at the camp especially during the rainy season, pointing out that some camps do not have latrines. He revealed that a surveillance team was on the ground sensitising and treating those affected.

According to UNICEF, Kakuma refugee camp is home to 169,203 refugees out of whom 90,406 are from South Sudan.
