The Central Equatoria State Ministry of Health has reported nine cases of cholera in Terekeka County, marking it as the second county to register cases after Juba County.
This information was disclosed by Nejua Juma Mursal, the state health minister, on Saturday during the Mundari Cultural Festival.
“Currently, we are combating cholera in Juba County, where cases have reached 3,036, with 32 recoveries,” she said. “In recent days, we have also recorded some cases here in Terekeka.”
The minister emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment. “These nine cases were confirmed here in Terekeka by the rapid response team. I urge everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize cleanliness.”
This comes after the state ministry of health on Wednesday last week launched Cholera vaccination in Juba County focusing on the Munuki and Juba town blocks. The campaign will expand to Terekeka and Yei River counties in response to the increasing number of cholera cases.
Minister Mursal advised that anyone with signs of cholera should be rushed to the nearest health center.
“If anyone is vomiting or seen visiting the toilet frequently, he/she should first be given salt mixed with water or sugar and then rush them to the hospital,” she advised. “And above all, we need to keep our environment clean, have clean drinking water, and eat hot food.”
Cholera is an infection of the intestines caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholera and can be contracted from drinking water or eating food containing cholera bacteria which can cause life-threatening watery diarrhea and vomiting.
For his part, Augustino Awan, Terekeka County Medical Director, said those who contracted cholera are receiving treatment at the county hospital and are in good condition.
“As you have heard from the state minister of health, we had 14 suspects, but later 9 were confirmed. We started recording from the 30 December 2025 up to date.” He said. “9 were confirmed and all of them are in good condition.”
The medical director however reiterated the need to fix the facility’s theater which he said was closed last year.
