At least 50 people have died in a cholera outbreak in Abu Azabad Locality in Sudan’s West Kordofan state and the total number of people who have caught the disease has reached at least 350, according to a medical doctor.
The medical director of Abu Azabad Hospital, Abdul-Aziz Al Nair, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that many people are dying of cholera before they could reach the hospital, adding that 25 patients are still receiving treatment at the health facility.
He pointed out that health facilities in the area face shortages of medicines and workers, including the main hospital at the locality seat, describing the situation as disastrous.
Meanwhile, Al Safi Mohammed, who represents Abu Zabad in Sudan’s National Legislative Assembly, called on the health ministry to intervene.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease. Cholera is a spread through eating food or drinking water contaminated with faeces. Symptoms appear quickly, from two hours to five days after ingestion.
