Cholera crisis:  Jur River lawmaker calls for lifesaving intervention

A member of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly representing Marialbai Payam in Western Bahr el-Ghazal State has called for urgent intervention from health partners to tackle a cholera outbreak in Tharkueng, Jur River County.

Anyar Anyar Dor, the local MP, warned that the situation requires immediate action to prevent further spread of the disease.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Saturday, Dor stressed that health organizations must step in to provide essential hygiene services to affected communities.

“We need organizations to stand with us firmly and to keep monitoring the affected area so we can control cholera,” Dor said. “As the heatwave intensifies, we must remain vigilant. We are also appealing for increased public awareness campaigns.”

Dor emphasized the need for hygiene facilities to be established in the wider environment and called for the deployment of hygiene workers to the affected areas.

Last week, the State Health Ministry reported three cholera-related deaths out of 28 confirmed cases.

Dr. Francis Michael Hassan, from the Department of Preventive Medicine, confirmed the outbreak at the Tharkueng military barracks following reports of a severe diarrhea outbreak.

Cholera, a waterborne disease, spreads rapidly in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. Health experts have repeatedly warned that without swift intervention, outbreaks can escalate, particularly during periods of extreme weather.

Local authorities are now urging international health partners to provide support to contain the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
