Health workers have discovered 40 suspected cases of measles in Wau, the capital of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, and nearby areas, reporting that the most affected people are children between the ages of 5 and 14.

The cases were reported between 5 and 11 December in Wau, Gogrial West and Aweil South.

The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says relief workers are trying hard to stop the spread of the outbreak.

In late November health workers vaccinated nearly 18,000 children in protection sites and in Wau town.

“Humanitarian organizations have increased measles surveillance and are implementing sensitization programmes to educate about the signs, symptoms and dangers of the disease in affected areas,” OCHA said in a bulletin today.

Since the beginning of 2016, more than 1,900 measles cases have been reported across South Sudan, including at least 20 deaths.

The number of measles outbreaks this year is 13, more than twice the number (5) in 2015, last year.
