An 8-year-old child was killed and three other passengers were injured when a vehicle they were traveling in was involved in an accident near the Unity Oil Field in Unity State’s Rubkona County on Wednesday afternoon.
The Traffic Police Director in Unity State, Captain Domai Dak Kai, told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday evening that the accident was a result of speeding.
“The vehicle was moving at high speed from the Rotriak Payam and heading to Rubkona Town with 16 passengers before driving into a river and killing the child and injuring three of the passengers,” he said. “The accident occurred on Wednesday at 3 p.m. because the driver was speeding.”
Captain Dak said the injured passengers are receiving treatment at Bentiu Hospital and the commuter vehicle has been detained by the police pending investigations.
“After the incident, the first thing we did was to arrest the vehicle and it is being detained at Bentiu Town Police Station until investigations are completed,” he said.
The police officer urged the family of the deceased child to remain calm as investigations are underway and cautioned drivers against speeding.
He also cautioned drivers against speeding and said it is one of the leading causes of death in the state.
